wired

Here's my tutorial for how I made my laundry room wire light fixture.

If you remember my laundry room started with the standard (read: BORING) builder grade florescent light fixture....

Then I bought a $20 (on clearance) lamp shade from West Elm and hung it from a $10 ceiling light kit from Lowes.  EPIC FAIL!!!!  Even though the room has a ton of natural light and the light fixture was pretty large - it just wasn't "right" for the space.  NOT to mention the 2 quarter sized holes when I removed the bolt and anchors that were holding up the ugly original light.  Time to try again!

So on a shopping trip I ran across this awesome organic light fixture from Nordstrom that I knew was exactly what I wanted.  Well, not EXACTLY, because instead of black wire I wanted a gold/brass finish.  But at least I had my inspiration!

Now, off to my local hardware store to get most of my supplies.  Including 16 gauge galvanized wire, smaller wire or garbage twist ties, gloves, wire cutters, tape and a ball the approximate size you want your globe to be.

Then I started wrapping the 16 gauge wire around the ball and used the tape to help keep it attached to the ball and semi-straight.  I made sure the leave a small enough hole for the wire to the ceiling and a large enough hole in the bottom.  That hold had to be large enough to 1). easily change the light bulb in the future AND 2). to remove the pretty large blue ball once it was deflated.  Those exercise balls can be pricey and you never know, I might need it in the future to exercise OR make another light fixture.  The latter is more probable!  Then when I overlapped the wire I used the smaller gauge wire to secure them together.  That was definitely the easy part.  Then you just do as many layers as you choose.  Then I decided to spray paint it a metallic gold (brass).  FYI - I painted the wired light fixture too - it was originally clear and silver.....

After hanging it - I still needed to tackle those darn HOLES!!!  A little spackle, sanding, wall texture and paint and it was as good as new!!!

And here's my finished light all for under $25!
I LOVE IT!!!!! I'm ready to make a few more - maybe even bigger!!!
But I need to find a ball large enough as my mold!

Hope this inspires you to do something creative!!
